The other phone is right beside you. Why is its name missing?

You want to send a photo before leaving, move a document to your Mac or hand a file to a friend. You tap Share, open AirDrop and wait. The receiving device never appears. Your VPN is connected, so changing its location feels like the next thing to try.

Pause that guess. A nearby handoff and an internet connection are different tasks. Start with the sharing controls on both devices, then test whether the VPN configuration changes the result. You will learn more from one small check than from five settings changed together.

First, make the receiving device ready

Apple’s AirDrop instructions begin with proximity, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth enabled on both devices, and Personal Hotspot disconnected if either person is using it. Ask the recipient to check who can send to them.

For someone outside your contacts, the recipient may need the temporary Everyone for 10 Minutes choice. Check the current prompt on both screens and follow it; supported system versions can add an AirDrop code. Restore your preferred receiving setting afterwards.

Use a small, non-sensitive file for the test, and confirm the intended recipient before sending. An empty device list, a declined request and a transfer that stalls are different symptoms. Note which one you actually see.

Then ask whether the VPN affects the local route

In its iPhone AirDrop guide, Apple advises checking that a VPN configuration does not prevent local networking. This is a reason to investigate the configuration, not a verdict that the VPN caused your problem.

Keep the two devices in place. Use the same file and receiving setting, then compare with the VPN disconnected for a short test. If the recipient appears only in that state, save that observation for support. It is evidence about your test setup, not proof that a different region or every VPN service will behave the same way.

A short Free VPN US connection check

If you already use Free VPN US, check its main connection screen before the comparison. You can disconnect there; Premium also includes Pause VPN. Confirm the actual state before retrying the handoff. A paused or disconnected VPN is not carrying your internet traffic through its tunnel, so avoid unrelated online tasks during the test.

When sharing is done, restore the connection you want for normal browsing. If you are setting up Free VPN US for the first time:

  1. Install and open. Get Free VPN US on the App Store and open the app.
  2. Choose an available Region or Service. Both connection choices are in the app; available options depend on your access tier.
  3. Connect and confirm. Check that the app reports an active connection.
  4. Test the intended app or site. This checks that task; it does not establish that AirDrop or every local device is compatible.

The searchable Free VPN US User Guide has deeper instructions for connection and pause controls. We have not run a Free VPN US/AirDrop device compatibility test for this article, and there is no claim of a guaranteed fix.

Do not confuse app permission with system sharing

An app may ask to find devices on your network. Apple’s local-network privacy guidance explains that the app’s permission can be changed in Settings → Privacy & Security → Local Network. But apps can still use certain system services, including AirDrop, without that individual permission.

So “allow local network for every app” is not a useful blanket instruction. Understand which app is requesting access and why. Keep the AirDrop receiving choice, app permissions and VPN connection state as separate checks.

Before a broad reset, keep a useful support note

Write down the sending and receiving devices, system versions, whether discovery or transfer failed, and what changed in the short comparison. Do not include the private document you were trying to send. That note helps Apple or VPN support investigate without making you repeat random settings changes.

On a managed work or school device, ask the administrator before removing a profile or changing required routing. The goal is to complete a nearby handoff while keeping the connection choices you understand—not to dismantle a working setup.

AirDrop and VPN FAQs

Can a VPN interfere with AirDrop?

Apple warns that a VPN configuration that prevents local networking can interfere with some Continuity features. That does not mean every AirDrop failure is caused by a VPN or that every VPN configuration behaves the same way.

Should I choose another VPN country to fix AirDrop?

Start with nearby sharing and the connection state. Choosing another VPN region is not a demonstrated fix for device discovery. Test one change at a time so you can tell what mattered.

What should I check before disconnecting the VPN?

Check that both devices are nearby, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are on, Personal Hotspot is disconnected, and the receiving device is available to you. Confirm these basic checks before blaming the network route.

Why does Everyone for 10 Minutes stop working later?

It is a temporary receiving choice. Ask the intended recipient to check their current AirDrop setting again when you are ready. Return to the more restricted receiving choice you prefer after sharing.

Does the Local Network permission switch control AirDrop?

Not by itself. Apple explains that apps can use system services such as AirDrop even without their own local-network access. Do not grant every app permission as a blanket fix.

Can I pause Free VPN US for a sharing test?

Premium includes Pause VPN, and the main connection screen offers disconnect. Check the actual connection state before testing and reconnect when finished. This guide does not claim a tested Free VPN US and AirDrop compatibility result.

Do AirDrop devices have to use the same home Wi-Fi network?

Follow Apple’s nearby-device instructions rather than treating AirDrop as an ordinary shared-folder connection. Wi-Fi and Bluetooth must be on; being signed into the same router is not the basic test described here.

Should I reset all network settings if the first test fails?

Do the small, reversible checks first and record the result. If the problem persists, follow Apple’s device-specific help or contact support. Do not remove an employer’s VPN profile or make broad network changes merely to try a file transfer.
