Keep your everyday connection straightforward
On shared Wi-Fi
Finish the hotspot sign-in first, then connect the VPN. It protects traffic between your Mac and the VPN server; it cannot make an untrustworthy website safe.
When you need a break
Use the app’s connection controls to disconnect when you choose. Check the active state again before a task you want carried through the VPN.

Read the plan and purchase screen. A basic VPN connection and optional privacy controls are different decisions. Choose what you need.
If your Mac will not connect
First check whether a familiar website loads on your normal connection on a trusted network. That check temporarily uses the network without the VPN. If it fails too, fix the Wi-Fi or hotspot sign-in before retrying the app.
If the internet works but the VPN does not, confirm the app’s VPN configuration was allowed, check for another active VPN and try one other available region. Update from the App Store and keep the exact error message. Do not remove a work profile or turn off the Mac’s security protections as a routine fix.
